Blog #7 - Ch. 13 BBG

Since reading “Consider the Lobster”, I’ve been thinking about food a lot (I already think about it a lot, but even more now, if that is possible.) When browsing the BBG, I came across chapter 13, which focuses on the environment. More specifically, I flipped to the section on “Food & the Environment”. When the chapter started to focus on the different views coming from vegetarians and meat lovers, I became a little hesitant. In my experience, there has always been a uncomfortable and thick tension between these two groups, and it makes me uneasy to think about it. When focusing on this topic, there are some people from both sides of the argument that try to make a point that the other side is “uneducated” or “wrong”. (I want to say, that in no way do I mean to generalize these attitudes to encompass every person from either side.) “You shouldn’t eat meat” and “There’s no point in being a vegetarian” are arguments I hear or see at least once a week, especially now that social media has become a safe-haven for broadcasting opinions for everyone to see. These simple phrases grow into an intense battle about who is right, when it comes to what to eat. However, the truth is, there is no correct answer. Each person can decide what they believe is right and wrong with their eating habits. I think it is time to finally put this argument to rest, and to allow people to express whatever they believe is right, without an intense debate following immediately after.
